Gavin J. O’Keefe is an intellectual property attorney with Greer, Burns & Crain in Chicago. He has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in various technical fields, with a specialty in the area of computer hardware and software.
At GBC he serves a diverse group of clients, ranging from individual inventors to Fortune 500 corporations, and works with foreign associates throughout the world to assist GBC clients in building and maintaining global patent portfolios.
Mr. O’Keefe also has experience in securing and enforcing trademark rights, both domestic and international, and has represented clients in litigation involving actions such as patent, trademark, and copyright infringement.
As part of his IP legal practice, he has drafted and negotiated licenses and other settlement agreements that have achieved effective dispute resolutions for GBC clients. He also provides legal opinions on a variety of intellectual property matters that enable clients to make informed decisions, and better manage their risk.
Mr. O’Keefe also represents clients in trademark cancellation and opposition actions before the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and other trademark tribunals throughout the world.
A substantial portion of Mr. O’Keefe’s legal practice focuses on remedies for infringement of IP rights on the Internet.
His practice includes the design and implementation of online anti-counterfeiting strategies for multiple well-known international brands, with an emphasis on addressing emerging legal issues and enforcement challenges in the digital age.
As part of his anti-counterfeiting practice at GBC, he handles trademark and copyright infringement issues in the e-commerce space, and is the primary administrator of several large domain name portfolios of popular global brands.
Mr. O’Keefe received a J.D., with honors, from the Chicago-Kent Law School.
Prior to attending law school, Mr. O’Keefe received a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems, also with honors, from the University of Dayton, and worked as an internal web developer for a major telecommunication company in Chicago.
